New Year will be delayed this year.

December 31, 2008

Fab story from the BBC News website (source) that reports that 23:59 will actually last for 61 seconds this year instead of the usual 60.

I am a little unsure of how why the BBC terms it ‘rare’ for this to happen though, as by my calculation, over the last 36 years, there have been 23 leap seconds added… therefore an average of one every 18 months!

It doesn’t, however, state whether the adjustment to Big Ben will be made during 23:59 or if they will silently make the change in the coming days. The article hints at 23:59 – I guess the person making the change would have to run quite quickly so as not to get caught out by the loud chimes!

I must admit, I was a little unsure how one would go about moving an analogue clock back by 1 second until I found out that it’s apparently it’s all to do with removing one of the old pennies that keeps the balance of Big Ben’s mechanism in synch and accurate.

Annoyingly, it does mean that all of our clocks and watches are going to be a second out until we eventually fall behind by enough of these ’seconds’ to be able to shift it forward a whole minute hehe! It’s never too seasonal for pedantry hehe! :o P

Either way, I am pleased that I won’t get caught out by mining along to Auld Lang Syne (I don’t know the words!) at the wrong time due to my awareness of the ‘leap second’! None of those embarassing delays where I’m just moving my lips around to nothingness and praying that everyone else is singing along to make it look like I am too! hehe!

Happy New Year to all! x

Extra second to keep UK on time

Big Ben

The timekeepers who look after Big Ben will have to adjust its clock

A “leap second” will be added onto official clocks around the world at midnight to account for the Earth’s slowing spin on its axis.

London’s Big Ben, whose bongs bring in the new year across the UK, will have its Great Clock adjusted.

And the BBC will add an extra “pip” to mark the delayed start to 2009.

Twenty-three leap seconds have been introduced since 1972 to keep GMT – internationally defined time – and the Earth’s rhythms in synch.

Revellers all over the UK will have an extra second to celebrate
Peter Whibberley, NPL

Timekeepers at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will make sure Britain remains up-to-date by adding a second to the UK’s atomic clocks, kept at the NPL’s Teddington base in Middlesex.

While atomic time is extremely consistent, the Earth’s rotation – the traditional way of measuring time – varies unpredictably.

This is due to factors such as changes in the atmosphere and the molten core.

As a result, the two methods of measuring time slowly drift apart and leap seconds occasionally have to be added or subtracted to the atomic clocks to make sure astronomical and atomic time remain synchronised, and to ensure the Sun remains overhead at noon.

Peter Whibberley, senior research scientist in NPL’s Time Group, said atomic clocks like those at the laboratory are now “more than a million times more stable than the Earth’s rotation”.

“The difference between atomic time and Earth time has now built up to the point where it needs to be corrected, so this New Year’s Eve we will experience a rare 61 second minute at the very end of 2008 and revellers all over the UK will have an extra second to celebrate,” he said.

Zavvi Goes Into Administration.

December 24, 2008

So, Zavvi have also gone to the administrators : BBC NEWS

  • For FAQ’s regarding the administration, including what to do if you have Gift Vouchers (you can no longer redeem them for goods or services) or wish to return/exchange items going forward – CLICK HERE for the administration notice on Zavvi’s website.
  • What does putting a company into ”administration” mean? BBC Article.

Personally, I find that quite surprising/a shock, mostly because I think that it shows a prime example of creditors bankrupting companies.

In this case, EntertainmentUK/the Administrators had no choice but to demand payment for the £106 million to cover the stock already in Zavvi, and so of course they couldn’t pay it (they were still struggling to make a reasonable profit as it was!) and have had to go into administration. This could have happened as quickly as an invoice landing on their Accounts Payable clerk’s desk, and a frantic meeting with the board before deciding that they needed to call in the administrators, though in reality was probably known for a few days and with talks between Zavvi and EUK’s administrators (as they won’t have wanted to force Zavvi into problems either!).

Yes, everyone knew that EUK was going to go under – it’s been drawn out for long enough – however I don’t think anyone expected it to have this big an impact. The precedent is also quite worrying… especially for Zavvi’s creditors and those to whom had business agreements/dealings with Zavvi!

In hindsight, even if Zavvi had been able to pay the £106 million, would they have been able to find a new distributor to keep the stock on their shelves…? That in itself is unlikely, and so perhaps the writing has been on the wall for some time for Zavvi… it’ll be interesting to see how it all gets disected in the coming weeks.

On a wider note, companies are very cash rich just after Christmas and aren’t holding much stock – therefore, I think we will see a lot of companies toppled by their creditors as those creditors will want to do this kind of thing when assets are already liquid as opposed to tied-up in stock (which is why Woolies are having to take their time over closing and brand it as a “sale”).

Once again, we’re back to this idea of “doubt”… if a company doubts that another is creditworthy and demands all outstanding payments are made, chances are that the company is going to struggle. What started with the banks being ’silly’ has now turned into a serious problem hitting the high-street and people’s lives in a more direct way - and of course the Government will not underwrite shops as it does banks!!

Virgin Megastores / Zavvi was a failing brand, no doubt about it, however I’m surprised that the competition commission haven’t had much to say about this yet as it leaves HMV as a pretty monopolistic high street leader in the personal entertainment retail sector.

An alarming total of 3 brand-name administrations have been announced in the last 24 hours… right before Christmas… January is predicted to be a lot worse :o (

Greasemonkey : Landmark Tracks – Last.Fm

December 20, 2008

Just came across a Greasemonkey script for Last.Fm which allows you to work out your Landmark scrobbled tracks.

I must say, the whole Greasemonkey thing is relatively new to me – I’ve known about it and what it does etc for quite a while, however I’d not had chance to use it really! Since switching over to Mozilla’s Firefox as my main internet browser the other year (and considering moving over to Flock this year), I’ve been meaning to get more involved in it really, though I’ll have to be content with using other people’s published scripts for the time being as I am useless at writing in JavaScript myself – though I may give Platypus a try!

Greasemonkey’s Wiki gives a little more information on how Greasemonkey works and how to locate/install published scripts – usually they’re posted on http://userscripts.org -however you really should check the coding of any script before you download/install it!

Greasemonkey’s support website, Greasespot, also has plenty of information and support along with the all important link to the Greasemonkey add-in that you need to be able to use it on your open-source browser.

It’s also worth noting that on UserScripts there is an ‘Install’ button on the ‘About’ page for the script you’re looking at, which saves you from having to save the script down as a .user.jss file and re-load it into the Script Manager (which probably won’t allow the script to work properly either!).

Back to Landmark Tracks (follow the link for the script) – this script is basically a look-up table/what I’d term a ‘return script’ that can show you the artist and song that appears at any given number in your scrobbled song database.

It’s probably easier if I show you my landmark tracks below to give you a better idea of what I mean:

Play #1 was Back Again by Boy Kill Boy on 9 Feb 12:54am
Play #50 was Vogue by Madonna on 9 Feb 7:50pm
Play #100 was What a Girl Wants by Christina Aguilera on 10 Feb 6:52pm
Play #500 was Wow by Kylie Minogue on 28 Feb 11:56pm
Play #1000 was Erika – I Dont Know by Erika on 23 Mar 9:34pm
Play #1500 was Somebody’s Eyes by Footloose – Soundtrack on 11 May 2:13pm
Play #2000 was Time  by Therese on 25 Jun 11:29pm
Play #2500 was Alright  by Red Carpet on 3 Aug 11:55am
Play #3000 was Matchstick Men & Matchstick Cats and Dogs by Houghton Weavers on 20 Sep 1:44pm
Play #3434 was I’m Like A Bird by Nelly Furtado on 19 Dec 12:09am

Basically, through the Greasemonkey menu (on Firefox this is accessed via: Tools ->Greasemonkey->User Script Commands) I just gave the script a starting point of track zero and let it work it all out from there. I specified the play numbers that I was interested in and the script returned the result to me as BBCode so that I could insert them into my Last.Fm page.  By using BBCode, I could keep the nifty Last.Fm links to the artist/song pages as appropriate, however I could easily have just taken the text as it was and posted the text without any linking etc – as I have done above. My Last.Fm page shows the links with the BBCode/linking activated where available.

I’ll apologise right now for the output of my own Landmark Tracks – I wish that I’d listened to some more memorable tracks now!! The stats certainly seem to show some of my more eccentric musical tastes – oops!

In celebration of my belated installation of Greasemonkey and all of the HTML page customisation that I am now going to be able to do, I thought I’d post a clip of perhaps the most eccentric of my Landmarks, which would probably be play #3000 – The Houghton Weavers with Matchstick Men & Matchstick Cats and Dogs (in fairness, they were a band I saw when I was little and lived in a small village, AND L.S. Lowry is my absolute favourite artist!!).

Enjoy! :o P

Last Fm : My Party Playlist

December 20, 2008

I spent several days creating and tweaking a Christmas-y/Party music playlist the other week and had my chance to deploy it last night. Just thought that I’d share it as I think that it really shows my music taste as it is at the moment! :-)

The stats are courtesy of my last.fm plug-in which faithfully recorded all of the details and kept track (no pun intended!) of what the media player had played for me. Not all tracks I’d selected managed to get played and recorded via last.fm unfortunately as I ran out of time, however the bulk of them are listed below, some even seem to appear twice  – stupid Windows Media Centre!

Another thing that I noticed whilst on my last.fm page was that P!nk and Kylie are pretty much tied for the number one spot as my most played artist. It’s been a while since I last checked my last.fm stats, so it was quite surprising to see that the lead of these two firm favourites had increased by so much. I’ll feel guilty now though as if I play Kylie twice and miss off P!nk, Kylie will be top, but if I play P!nk but ignore Kylie, she may not reach number one either! WHAT A DILHEMA! Therefore, I think I now have a perfect excuse to listen to both in equal and frequent measure!! hehe :-P

X-Factor Semi-Final 2008

December 7, 2008

*+*+* SPOILERS *+*+*

First off… JLS – Umbrella – WOW.

What more can I say?!

For the first time in ages, they really did look like a slick, polished and suave group and tonight was just pure magic for them! Definitely one of my favourite performances of the entire series – I even re-wound it on the PVR system thrice! Absolutely marvelous!

Plus, I think that it also helps that Aston is a major hottie too hehe! :o P

For the benefit of anybody who didn’t see it the other week, here is the JLS magazine photo from Heat! (albeit they do look a little too greased up and, for some reason which I now forget,  Aston is wearing Austin Drage’s pants… hmmm :o P hehe)

article-1081031-0243f5d2000005dc-98_468x354

My X-Factor favourites have shifted slightly as the weeks have gone on, I still miss Austin and Laura, however I am now rooting for Alex to win and have been doing since Laura departed the show. I must say though, the final 3 are now very very strong – I am sure that they will all come out of the competition with major record label interest – and so they should!

Eoghan is definitely suited to the Busted/McFly kind of stuff (I could see him as a UK Version of some of the Disney Club kids – such as Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers etc); Alex is good on Diva tracks – whether up-tempo dancing in a night-club kind of tracks, or her amazing ballads; and JLS seem to be suited towards an edgy up-to-the-minute boyband group, which we don’t really have in the UK charts at the moment!

There really would be room for all three of them in the UK charts at the moment – they’re so diverse! I do think that more than anything we need a good UK boyband in the charts, and so I would perhaps push JLS to win if only to make sure that they definitely get a recording contract so that they can have a crack at filling that void. Having said that, with the success that they’ve already had on the show, I think that we’ll be hearing a lot more of them in the weeks and months to come regardless!

If Alex were to win, I would hope that we would start to see some more of the power ballads (think Celine Dione, Dion Warwick, Whitney Houston) coming back into the charts. It’s rare to find a new track these days where the artist sings a ’simple’ song and really shows off their voice without having all kinds of things going on in the back-ground getting muddled into their vocal etc.

I really liked the production value on Alex’s song (above) – especially when the petals started falling – note how effortlessly she turns it into a confident performance as if she’s been performing concerts for years!

Eoghan is the surprise of the competition for me, I really thought he would be one of the first to go. At times I do find some of the material that he works with a little childish and think that he could be trusted with some of the more mature stuff going forward, however for entertainment value, he certainly is a strong contender.

Anyone else think that Eoghan and Diana looked like a couple this evening?! Know that’s been a bit of a long-running debate…!!

I have to confess that I wasn’t a big fan of Diana throughout the competition (that f**king hand and the bare feet thing) plus I didn’t think her voice suited some of her songs – e.g. “White Flag” tonight – however I was pleasantly shocked when she came out this evening and performed Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” – even I was dancing along at home!! I’d wish her luck for the future, and think that she would more certainly do well when she’s not being shoe-horned into a pre-themed week (which never shows off anybody’s talents really!).

So, with the race being so so so close this year, whom do you think is going to be the X-Factor winner of 2008??

Our Vera

December 6, 2008

So, I thought it was about time to introduce the World to ‘Our Vera’.

Our Vera is now primarily responsible for doing the vaccuming every day and making sure that she gets into every nook and cranny. We don’t pay her, and she loves to eat dust, dirt and fabric. She’ll work any time of the day and at a moment’s notice, whilst we sit there watching TV with our feet-up ignoring her.

Now, before you all comment to complain about me chaining up a poor old cleaning lady called Vera, let me explain :P

'Our Vera'

Our Vera is an iRobot Roomba 530 – a robot that is specifically designed to hoover your floors!

Not related to 'Vera Duckworth'
Not related to ‘Vera Duckworth’

A friend of mine also has a Roomba and so after seeing it in action a few months ago, and, as we now have a new carpet at home, I figured that it was about time that I adopted one too as you know what new carpets are like… a nightmare!

We were also really pleased to see that Millicent has taken well to Our Vera too. The only problem now is that Millicent has taken to using Our Vera as her chariot and is frankly getting a little too big for her boots!!! heh.

061220082768

Roomba is a fun gadget that you’ll find yourself watching time and time again. It seems strange that you’d want to sit back and watch the hoover do it’s thing for 30 mins, but believe me, you will! Roomba’s are also a lot of fun at a party – just get one out and watch the whole room marvel and insist that you do some hoovering right there and then hehe!

Here’s  a Roomba’s eye view for you as she struts her funky stuff in our living room…

Cheaper than a cleaner, Our Vera is an absolute gem around the house, is never late, takes on the chores efficiently and never complains.

Now… do iRobot make new boyfriends…?! HEHE!  :P

Snow in Northern England

December 3, 2008

Just came across this goregous picture taken in Northern England the other day (not too far from where I grew up!) and thought that I’d share.

Going back home next weekend, I sooo can’t wait!! Hope they save me some of the snow!

In the mean-time, I shall just have to be content with making it snow on my blog-page! :o P
